Premier Roofing Overall Review

Alright the long-awaited Premier Roofing Review is finally here. It’s been long delayed I wanted to wait until I was finished with my time at Premier Roofing and after my email account was shut down, I believe we are there. That and I kept putting this one off and dragging ass on blog posting so I apologize for that.

Let’s see if I had to summarize working for Premier Roofing Company as a Field Sales Representative, I would say it is very rewarding hard work if you are successful at it. If you are not successful, it’s going to be rough. There are lots of variables affecting your success and some are out of your control like if there is light or no hail, HOA no soliciting in your neighborhood, bad neighborhood not very open, insurance adjusters not passing roofs, etc.

There’s not much you can do about some of those, no matter how good you are at sales and door knocking. There is just a certain amount of luck and circumstance you need to go your way. So, if you do not have these things going for you at the very beginning your confidence will get crushed and you will get discouraged easily.

I can say this from personal experience that my first 3 blocks were not hot, all in all I sold 2 roofs and one fell through and the other was extremely slow. Fortunately, the next several blocks picked up for me, but you see where I am coming from and how demoralizing that can be especially on a commission only pay.

Now of course if you suck at people skills, or you suck at sales, or you do not learn the training material or take it seriously you will also have a tough time. This should be given, you can’t show up on the front door of a house and be mumbling or stumbling all over your script or don’t have responses to any objections. You will clearly fail.

So, I highlighted some of the potential issues and pitfalls you may face with this job lets get to the good stuff. I think first and foremost would be the compensation, now obviously its commission based so if you don’t sell you don’t get paid however I think with the 6 week draw pay guaranteed is a really great policy that helps new sales reps get their feet under them and start making the sales and getting to the 2nd tier of the pay scale to start bring in some money.

For those of you who may not know the pay scale I worked with as an intern was $100 for a signed contracts with a claim number, $200 for when the roof is put into production, and for interns only we received $200 flat rate commission for when the roofs were built rather than the commission payout that the full time reps received since we were temporary workers and the insurance payout process is lengthy. This works out to $500 for a completed roof. Between the draw pay, all the various steps and payments throughout the process, and my $3,000 back to school  bonus for hitting a production target(30 roofs in production),  I made $22,200 this summer not including taxes. This has been way more lucrative than any of my previous internships or co-ops. It should be noted that I also took about a week-long vacation in the middle of the summer, however I also was closing deals after I returned to school. Altogether a fantastic earning opportunity when successful, to gauge my success I was the 6 or 7th top sales rep when I left out of 192 that were working throughout this season.

Sales itself is a great opportunity for you to learn people skills, how to build confidence, build value, work on conflict resolution, and learn how to deal with rejection. I think all these opportunities listed above are amplified with door to door sales because there is no medium to mitigate the emotion, it is in your face rejection. If you don’t have tough skin this will be challenging to overcome. I can tell you first hand that some of the rejections I received and some of the deals that fell through really stung and really got into my head.

I learned a lot about perseverance with this internship. As an independent contractor we have the freedom to work when we want however when you don’t sell you don’t get paid and when you don’t go out there and knock doors you won’t make any sales. I can tell you there were many days where I pulled up to my street in my car and I did not want to get out the car and go knocking. Even worse was when you were going through the same street for the 5th or 6th time trying to get in front of more people and knowing people were avoiding you or were simply tired of seeing you walk on their street. That was a tough pill to swallow and I hated it more than anything.

I learned how to hustle in this internship. Previously in my prior work experiences you punched the time clock and started making money and whether you were working or not it didn’t matter because that clock was still ticking. With Premier there was no clock just agreements and PFYNR’s and COC’s, those were the payment scales. There were weeks when I walked away with barely anything to show for it and there were weeks that made me feel on top of the world. We were always hustling though, the top producers, the top sales reps, Saturday’s and Sunday’s till dark. We took meetings in the mornings and got our paperwork all together and door knocked and sold all afternoon. Nonstop all summer with little to no breaks. I even confirmed a sale (got the claim number) in the Atlanta Airport on the way to my vacation destination!

I believe that covers my experience from head to toe. Overall it was an incredible lucrative experience. I don’t think I will return to Premier Roofing though. I believe with my level of education and my skill set that I would be better off to pursue a different kind of sales role or a different role all together. Also roofs in the summer of Kansas City are hot and that really sucked. I do appreciate the opportunity and I am glad I could do as much as I did while I was there. I am slightly disappointed though, I had told my supervisor and sales manager that I wanted to make 30 sales that summer. I lied about that, the real target was 50 sales and I just didn’t want to come off as a cocky asshole, I got to 47 sales. In my final push to get my last sales I got frustrated with a customer and went a little too far with a prank regarding dropping off my business card. I am sorry for that and how inappropriate that was of me however I think basic communication on both parties would have prevented that issue from ever occurring.

I also feel like I left a lot of sales on the table and could have performed better during portions of my summer. I think I took a few too many days off and gave up and went home too early on occasion. Had I pushed myself to the max I think I would have been able to hit my target of 50 sales and perhaps made it to the top of the sales leaderboard which would have been my top goal. Nonetheless I think my performance showed that I am an adequate sales representative for Premier Roofing and I learned a lot from them and I hope I did enough to help them.

The Last Splurge

If you follow Grant Cardone at all he preaches increasing income above all else. The 2nd step in the process is to reduce taxes. I have done a relatively good job of that thus far, my internship allowed me to dictate how much income I make because it was a 100% commission job. I have tracked all receipts and have started researching how to minimize my tax bill this upcoming spring as well. The third step in his cycle is to save specifically “save it all”. This requires you to live your daily life without increasing your cost of living while you increase your income.

We see people violating this rule every day, some guy gets a promotion at work makes an extra $10k a year and goes out and celebrates by purchasing a new BMW. That promotion and pay increase did not make any difference since he increased his cost of living. He probably would have been better off getting a $5k pay increase and not blowing the money on material things.

I never was into blowing my money, here and there I would “treat yo self” but nothing drastic. Last summer at the end of my internship which paid me quite well and was a decent increase from the previous year ($150 more a week) I bought my only watch and a piece of wall art. That was my form of treating myself which came out to be about $250.

This summer by the time it is over and with bonuses included as well as any lingering payments I should avg a pay increase of about $350 more a week (no living stipend though) than last summer. I should be able to reduce my tax bill because of my 1099 status this year substantially. (I received about $1300 back last year, but I also had taxes taken out every paycheck and I am not taxed under my current pay system yet.) So, check box 1 and 2 for Mr. Cardone. I should also note I didn’t upgrade my standard of living during this time. I currently live in the cheapest apartment my roommate and I could find that would be able to accommodate a 3-month lease. It is cockroach infested and is pretty hood for a $400 a person month rent ($450 for 3-month lease). I drive the same car, I wear the same clothes, I buy the same food, I buy the same beer, and spend the same amount at the bars.

Onto box #3 spending: Looking over my expenses which I track to the penny, we’re looking pretty good. I went over them in a blog post about halfway through the summer and you can check them out here. I spent some extracurricular on/with my girlfriend for the vacation and everything like that. I also spent some money at the bars and on booze and other non-constructive habits and vices, but that was minimal. Overall, I didn’t blow any of my money. That is until this upcoming weekend.

I plan to spend a bunch of money when I return to home and go shopping with the girlfriend Saturday. I WANT new clothes, new shoes, a new suit, and some other Knick knacks. I say want and not need because that’s just what they are. The clothes I wear are fine but perhaps a bit dated. Some of my shorts and shirts I often wear I purchased 3-4 years ago and some are not in the best condition. I’d still wear them though, so it isn’t necessary I purchase new ones. Essentially this shopping trip is to purchase my “adult clothes” things that I will need in the future after I graduate college. That is why I call it the last splurge. This theoretically should get me the next two years or so of my life in terms of clothing and what not and would be considered the “treat yo self” portion of my saving.

Some of these purchases have been a long time coming for example the suit I currently wear I’ve owned for about 5 years, and I received a gift card for the purchase of a new suit last Christmas. The watch I purchased previously was intended to go with this new suit I plan to purchase. With upcoming interviews for full time jobs and the networking, events and other occasions I plan to attend you could consider this an investment in my dated wardrobe.

So, what do you all think? A waste of time and money or a much-needed update to prepare myself for what comes in my future.

 

 

Premier Roofing Update 7/31/18

Hey I’m back and its only been 8 days but lots of good things have happened so let’s jump right into it. The previous update from 7/23/18 had the following stats below, followed by the new stats:

Massive massive improvement thanks to an 11-roof investment property lead and success in the new neighborhood. I still have lots of potential customers to follow up with and PFYNR’s to close. This next week and a half is going to require 100% effort to achieve the results I want but it is entirely possible. My new goal is to make $17,000 from this internship and while I am quite a ways out according to my current stats ($6,600 made) I have a $3000 check coming Friday, I am currently at $1200 dollars made this week with 2 more days to go. I have $2200 riding on the PFYNR’s for the rental properties, as well as a bonus of $2000+ I will surely hit by the end of this week and will be received after I have completed the internship. With all that factoring in it is not unreasonable for me to hit that figure above! Again, an all-out effort is going to be required and I’m grinding it out every day knocking doors, following up with customers doing my best to crush it and keep pushing for the top of the leaderboard. Speaking of which I am about 5th in the company currently which is much better than about 25th which was the case in the previous update. I am gunning for the top spot and I believe that if my pipeline comes through and I continue to be successful in this new neighborhood that I will have a strong chance of achieving that. The #1 spot is held by a fellow intern at the KC branch I work at with 53 sales. I believe this is his last week working which provides a terrific opportunity to make up the ground next week!

Premier Roofing update 7/23/18

We are fast approaching the end of my internship here with 3 weeks to go. This is a very critical timeframe because I may be able to get PFYNR’s completed with any new customers before I leave for the summer. After I leave my work will be handed off to my supervisor and I believe I will receive a bonus for any jobs that are still in progress from when I leave. Not sure exactly if that is the correct phrasing or if that is the correct bonus structure however we will get there when we get there, and I still have plenty of work to do before we get there.

I am currently at 25 sales as of writing this on July 23rd, this puts me just shy of the leaderboard which starts at 28 sales as of this morning. I do have an incredibly stacked pipeline however and I will explain that one a little further. My current stats are:

86 presented roofs

25 signed roofs

17 Do not have enough damage

9 PFYNR’s

5 built

As I mentioned the pipeline before, I have 25 potential sales in my pipeline, and 11 PFYNR’s. Not to mention what I am going out and selling currently. Much of my overall success in this internship rides on my performance in these last few weeks to close sales, put roofs in production and continue to deliver outstanding customer service. I need these sales and roofs in production for my own personal income as I am far off from my goal of $20,000 from this internship as I have originally planned. I’ve made $6200 this summer so far with thousands of dollars riding on my pipeline alone. Now my actual breakeven number is around $14,000 which is about what I made last year including my living stipend. I believe that is achievable when my pipeline, potential future sales, and my bonus are factored in.

So, my game plan is to just keep on keeping on and grinding this thing out. I have a build coming up this week which 5 sales in my pipeline are riding on. I’ve also moved to a new area that was recently struck with hail, I’ve only worked a ¼ day or so out there as I had an event this weekend I was leaving town for. It will be a little more difficult now as I have a little way to travel to this area and still have meetings and follow ups in my old section of neighborhood as well. I also have a block and a half that I still need to door knock and follow up in in my old neighborhood. This will make things more difficult, but I will make the most of it. If I can close my leads and work my pipeline I think that will bring some weight off my shoulders and we can start making some serious progress and drive this hard into the end of the internship.

Premier Roofing Update

How everyone is doing well I’m sorry its been awhile, while blogging and the content I am trying to deliver is one of my goals I’ve been more preoccupied with work and building my Instagram platform. Anyways as I write this post I have 22 sales with 3 dead. Its rather unfortunate as there is a tier at 25 sales which I wanted to hit about 2 weeks ago but I am still slowly struggling to get there. Several issues which have led to this, I have taken days off that I shouldn’t have, I’ve had other commitments on the weekends that took away from my time on the street. I am currently on my way back from a week-long vacation as well which has obviously taken away from my sales potential. I’ve also had sales fall through via failed inspections, cancelling the contract etc. Ultimately it is my fault for my shortcomings however some of the circumstances are out of my control.

Looking forward, I’ve had 3 builds completed and two more coming up this next week. Builds in general help me out with closing the deals in the surrounding areas, another opportunity to provide an excellent customer service experience, and of course my commission off the build ($200).

This next week I had a potential $1400 to be made as well as $1200 that I am waiting on an email for, hopefully we can get that all closed here shortly. I finished this last week up at $1300 and had a terrible week prior to that finishing at $100. Ultimately, I need to make over $1500 a week from this point on + my bonus to make up for the disappointing performance and hit my breakeven point ($14000). It may take less than that to reach a break even point (I apparently get some very nice tax breaks that I didn’t have at my previous job) which could make it easier to break even in comparison to the previous summer.

I want to finish this week with over 25 sales, I have an estimated $1400 on the table however I want to make more than that as I need to average approx. $1500 the rest of the summer. I’d also like to get my $1200 deal completed so I can move on with the builds for those before I leave for the summer.

I’ll do my best to keep you all updated as we progress and keep crushing goals throughout the summer and the foreseeable future.

Premier Roofing week 4 and 5

Well it’s been an interesting one.

Let’s see we sandbagged week 4 because I couldn’t really get anything going, it was the weird middle ground of running out of potential customers on my old street and just starting out a new street and trying to earn the trust of my customers in the area. I only had 1 sale and 1 PFYNR ($300 total) for that week and we pushed those onto week 5.

Now week 5 gets me heated. Very heated. It turned out well I made $1100 on the week but in all honesty, it should’ve been around a $1500 week. The last $400 could have been made up very easily with some customers doing their part and communicating with me. It would have worked out much better on both of our ends. That was very frustrating but now the wheels are turning on this beast of a position I am in. Week 5’s slightly disappointing results should lead into a stellar week 6. I would like to finish the week at $2,000 but we will see how we do, as I’ve mentioned previously some of this is simply out of my control. I mean when I call and text a customer 3 separate times over the course of 5 days for some information and they don’t deliver it to me and I knock on their door trying to get a hold of them there’s not much more I can do.

I also can’t control when my supervisor gets his paperwork and estimates together, I am waiting on two of those to be completed to schedule 2 PFYNR’s this week. Either way though, I have finally been gaining traction and gaining momentum in the areas I’ve been working in. With my first build happening on Wednesday this week and several insurance inspections already scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and possibly Wednesday we should be getting well on our way here shortly.

A couple more street signs, couple more claims approved, couple more builds and we will be moving forward with so much momentum and reach that I will be pulling money in hopefully. It was just a shame that we ran into some claims that didn’t go through because of bad luck, lack of communication, and drones that don’t do a very good job at inspecting. Either way we’ll keep pushing on like we always have.

I will be doing my best to keep the content rolling and keep providing value and inspiration to my followers. I had a message in my inbox for a while on Instagram (it was in the requested message potion, sorry it took 3 weeks for me to notice it!) and it was the first time that someone said they actively followed me and were inspired by what I was doing and was asking what they should be doing. That was a huge honor for me and I hope I can inspire and help others soon!

Internship: Week 1

If you haven’t heard yet, I am interning at Premier Roofing Company in Kansas City as one of their sales reps this summer. This is far different from my previous co-op (Samtec, various engineering positions) and my internship (Caterpillar, manufacturing engineer). So far, it’s going well, I have learned the sales script and I am currently assigned to 3 blocks of a street which is about 92 houses. I was training with my supervisor from Tuesday to Thursday out on the streets going door to door and inspecting roofs. We made a sale on Tuesday and Wednesday but had no luck Thursday. Today (Friday May 18, 2018) was my first day out on my own for my current territory. I hit the streets at 2pm and went through any remaining houses that we have not spoken to the owners yet out of the 92 on my list, I made it through the first round of door knocks by 3:30 and I had time to kill and I went down the street to the local Starbucks and got to use the Wi-Fi. You quickly realize how much you take Wi-Fi for granted when you don’t have it and neither does your place of work (the streets that is, the office has Wi-Fi). I was back out on the streets at 4:30ish and did another lap through my territory and I was able to inspect 2 roofs, 1 had appropriate damage and 1 was essentially brand new, a 1-year old roof. Couldn’t close the damaged roof and we will follow up with that customer in the coming weeks. I did have 3 major downfalls today, 1.) a potential sale said that her and her husband wanted to wait on filing the claim, 2.) I tried to get my yard sign in the yard of one of the roof’s we inspected with a woman waiting to file a claim and she did not let me put the sign up, 3.) a house that we got approved by the adjuster to replace, her neighbor that shares the garage with her didn’t even want an inspection so that will cause some headaches in the future.

Anyway, looking ahead, I have this weekend with my 3 blocks still, we are approaching the 80% saturation rate we are looking to accomplish. I believe I counted 32/44 house saturation on my first section of the neighborhood. This comes out to 73% saturation and I am at 6 door knocks for most of my houses, so we’ll see what this weekend brings. They are calling for scattered thunderstorms for Saturday and Sunday which could cause some issues. Hopefully I can close some deals and start boosting up this next upcoming paycheck. My first paycheck comes in Friday which includes my training flat rate and my 2 sales with my supervisor. My next paycheck currently only includes the training flat rate.

With the end of the month soon approaching my credit card bill is due as well as June rent, on the Brightside my roommate gets here Sunday afternoon, so I will have someone to talk to and do things with.

Continue to look for updates about my internship, the stock market, and what I am reading/reviewing. I am pushing and shoving this summer and I finally got settled into my job and the apartment and everything so it’s going to be full speed ahead from now on.

If you have any tips on getting off work on a sales job of this sort, please let me know! I have tons of other commitments this summer, however, everything is on the weekends and that is my prime selling time. I know I won’t be able to go to everything and see everyone but there are critical times that I need to go attend to other business and my hope is to outperform all my peers in this job and that would give me some leeway with my schedule.

End of April- Mid May goal review

Hey everyone, sorry I haven’t posted in awhile life has been hectic per usual and currently trying to adjust to my new schedule, job, location, current living conditions etc. all at the same time. I’ll get into that at the end of this article but first let’s dive into what brought you here today.

I made some progress in the last portion of April despite initiation, classes, tests etc. and I ended here.

Main differences are a small bump in visitor s and IG posts however both fell short of their mark. Side money dropped significantly because I included my losses from options trading. I pumped out another 3 blog posts and 2 more clicks on amazon affiliates which was amazing to see.

All things considering, I would call that a strong finish to April considering what all was going on. Now let’s get to May and how crazy this month has already been. Here were the goals I set out to reach.

All of these were like what I have been striving to do this entire year nothing out of the ordinary, but wow did the train get derailed or what. First, I had dead week and finals coming up in early May both of which are incredibly strenuous and busy with schoolwork, tests, projects all coming down on the final two weeks of class along with all the social events of initiation, 21st birthdays, senior wills etc. etc. Then there was moving to Kansas City and my internship. Both of which have been huge adjustments. For one I have had all sorts of problems with moving into my apartment (had to do that a day late and ran errands all Monday to get that sorted out.) I still do not have Wi-Fi in my apartment, so I am writing and posting this article at a McDonald’s booth. My new job is very different from anything I have ever done in my life. Door to Door sales is in a world of its own and after completing my first actual day on the streets I can say without a doubt that I need to practice more before tomorrow’s door knocking. This has required lots of training outside of my working hours which cuts into Bsquared time. After all of that considered here’s where I’m at.

This was updated as of tonight and reflects the two weeks I have put into these goals. Unfortunately I did not make it as far as I wanted. I also don’t know how much I can progress this summer, I am hoping that once I get the internship down and I have less memorizing and practicing and some Wi-Fi in nmy apartment I will be more effective in my blogging world. I also plan to bring what I have gained and learned from this internship to my viewers and try to bring some value to your experience here on this site.

Summer Plans

In my spare time today, I did a little bit of thinking about what I wanted to do this summer as far as my finances are concerned.

  1. I am going to absolutely crush this internship/sales position. I mean crush it! This is the first time in my life that I will get paid on commission meaning every minute I am not working or trying to sell is a wasted minute. That goes beyond the job as well, I also have this blog and an Instagram, and I will continue to expand my social media presence and further build my personal brand.
  2. I want to move away from the umbrella of financial security of my parents. They have done a fantastic job providing for me all my life and I feel obligated to lighten their load. I am making it a goal of mine to work harder than ever before to obtain scholarships and other means to provide for my schooling. My parents have also paid for my housing during college and pending the results of my friend meeting with his landlord tomorrow I should be moving out the fraternity house and plan to pay my rent and all necessary living expenses. I also came up with my method to do so. I have talked about Lending Club before on this blog but for those of you who haven’t read about it yet you can reference this post about it “Lending Club Review”.

 

My favorite part about Lending Club is how liquid it is while you are making money. I get funds transferred to my portfolio nearly everyday as I have 110 active notes currently. This pays me about $100 a month in both interest and principal payments. If I own about 400ish notes I will receive about $350 in payments per month which is coincidentally my rent for this next school year again assuming the conversation with the landlord goes as planned tomorrow. That is all while making about a 7% gain as of this moment. This whole school year I have been pulling out my interest and principal payments to cover my expenses (its not enough however I spend more than $100 a month typically). If I can purchase that many notes however that should cover my rent payment which would be a passive income source for me. As of now that is my game plan for this next academic year. My typical food expenses as I have learned from diligently tracking them through my internship and co-op is about $60 a week or $240 a month. I plan to use my savings and any side money to cover that aspect of my expenses.

  1. I have also began looking at investment properties in my college town, with the hopeful influx of money I make this summer this may finally become a reality and I have also explained some of those plans in a previous post linked *here*.
  2. This will also be the first summer where I will be relatively free while I have been this interested in improving my life for the years to come. On my co-op I did not start investing until very late and then I returned to school and was again very busy with my other obligations. While on my internship I was taking 9 credit hours of summer class which took a very large toll on my time and extracurricular efforts. I lived an endless cycle of work, working out, and then studying and doing homework during the 5-day work week and then my Sunday’s were typically consumed in school work as well. This is another very exciting aspect of this summer that I can hopefully take advantage of.
  3. I intend to learn more than I ever have this summer as well. I have an ambitious reading goal this summer of 10 books which is crazy to think about since I have not read for leisure in years but the value that it has been bring to my life is incredible and I have learned so much already and I can’t wait to learn more. If you have any suggestions I am open to them all but I will most likely need to focus in on something related to what I would like to pursue later in my life, namely entrepreneurship, business, investment property and real estate, and investing.
  4. I would like to make a strong effort to help my fraternities recruitment efforts this summer. Due to the new structure of our recruitment and pledgeship process this summer will be the ultimate factor to our future success and I would like to give my time, effort and talent to this endeavor. Not that I haven’t helped in the past, but I see the high importance of this task, but it will also give a chance to develop my new skills.
  5. I believe this summer will also allow me to network more than I have in the past and I have given up some of those opportunities for my other obligations in the past. Again, with all that I have learned this school year I believe this will be a key aspect in my ultimate success later in life and the more I can network and connect with the others the more opportunities will present themselves.

I’m sure there are other aspects I am forgetting to include but these are just some highlights. I will do my best to update all my readers on what I am up to this summer. Hopefully this last 2 weeks of school won’t drain me to bad, I had the problem occur on my co-op.

Internship update

Hope everyone’s spring is going well. This past week I accepted a position at Premier Roofing in Kansas City as a salesman. This is very odd position in comparison to my previous internship/co-op as I worked in engineering disciplines for Caterpillar and Samtec. I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. I believe this internship will allow me to continue to expand this blog and any side endeavors I soon pursue. This internship will also set me up for a technical sales position that are popular in my field. The commission-based pay will also cater to my work ethic and determination and I hope I can make the most of the opportunity given to me. I also gained experience as head philanthropy chair when I talked to t-shirt sponsors which I believe will benefit me for this position. I will keep you all updated as things progress my hope is to walk out of this summer with a strong sales position experience and I have enabled my free time to the best of my ability to create another source of income or success. I also hope to invest my earnings to further diversify my portfolio and to set myself up for success during the coming school year and post-graduation.
